Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" has been performed and enjoyed, in this form, since about 1740. It began to enjoy more wide-spread recognition in 1829, 100 years after its first production. The first English version appeared in 1862, and was first performed in America in 1874. It sets the gospel of Matthew, chapters 26 and 27 to music. This piece is intended for solo voices as well as SATB choir.
